Payback
An Iraq War veteran loses his restaurant, and his pregnant wife, to a Brooklyn protection racket.

The first Dan Stone book starts with a debt that cannot be paid in money.
Payback is the first Dan Stone novel, and the published premise does not ease into the violence.
An editorial introduction to the book, its premise and the story surrounding it.
Dan Stone has already done one war. The book begins after he tries to leave it.
Published summaries say Stone, a former military sniper, and his wife Rita open a neighborhood restaurant in Brooklyn. A made man, Joey Batone, offers protection for a fee. Stone refuses. The retaliation is a flash-bang in the restaurant. Rita, pregnant, is inside.
A skill set with nowhere civilian to go
The premise then follows Stone west for months of preparation: disguise, false papers, and the sniper craft he already has. When he returns, the published accounts say he attacks the crew around Batone without taking the man himself first. The delay is the point. He wants the debt felt before it is settled.
Kirkus described the novel as the start of an assassin series and noted the attention Stone draws from police, federal agents, and a CIA operative, Jane Tanner. Those outside eyes keep the revenge plot from staying a private matter.
What the title is withholding
The publisher’s own framing says the mission of revenge can end in a dead end, and that an unusual group offers an exit. This feature stops before that bargain. The useful introduction is the setup: a blue-collar veteran, a burned restaurant, and a city that still has the man who ordered the fire.
